Fitness Instructors

Wendy - Indoor Cycling

I became a Spinning instructor in 1996 within a year of its invention. More than ten years later, our program is thriving at BIW and I continue to teach at least two classes per week, often more. As well, I participate in classes taught by our other instructors. My approach to teaching is modeled on best training practices for runners and cyclists. On Mondays, 5:30-6:30 p.m., I teach a "Tempo" class, which places full emphasis on maintaining a steady cadence. This class can best be described as a metabolic burner. The changes in resistance are incremental and subtle enough to enable riders to gradually increase their levels of exertion. My favorite description of Tempo riding is summed up in a single word: unrelenting.  My Friday morning class begins earlier than any other class and lasts 90 minutes. It follows an "all terrain" approach, except when every six weeks or so, we ride a "circuit," another pattern designed to use up every available calorie. Throughout my years of teaching, I have always remained a steady runner. I also took up outdoor cycling and completed many centuries, double centuries, Brevets and multi-day cycling trips. My goals for the future center mainly on running long races, but there remains no better way to cross train than to spin.

Courtenay  - Indoor Cycling

I love to spin, run, bike, swim, ski and play outdoors. My classes are challenging but fun, and the goal is to sweat hard, ride smart and sometimes sing loud. You definitely earn extra points for whooping it up and rocking out along with me. My introduction to spinning came in the late 90's, and I became an instructor, then a triathlete, soon thereafter. Spinning is to me a great cross-trainer as well as an end in itself.

For my "regular" work I have been in the social services/non-profit sector for almost two decades, with a multi-year excursion into photography and journalism while back home in New York.  A new mom, I am getting into the swing of my formally competitive-athletic-kick-butt self. I'm looking forward to seeing you in class or out on the running/biking trails.

Pat - Deep Core and Rainy Day Cycling

Pat is a machine! Climbers have repeatedly said that one month of the Deep Core Class has greatly improved their climbing. The Deep Core class is greatly influenced by Pat's renowned yoga teachers, among whom are Janet Stone, Les Leventhal, Tim Floreen, and Mark Morford. Pat currently has undergone the 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training with Janet Stone, and has plans to move on to the 500 Hour program.

As for the Rainy Day classes? Pat takes her outdoor cycling workouts, puts them to music, and takes them indoors for group indoor cycling sessions. Pat's cycling history includes the double centuries The Terrible Two (2 times first female finisher) and The Death Valley Double (first female finisher), and racing in the Pro 1/2 racing category for Touchstone Women's Elite Team.

Mark - Indoor Cycling

I've been a avid cyclist for 30 years. Currently I spend more time running trails but still love the bike and consider Touchstone Indoor Cycling  to be one the best  workouts around.   When I'm not teaching indoor cycling, I'm developing supportive housing for homeless people in San Francisco.

Gail - Indoor Cycling

I've been going to Berkeley Ironworks since it has opened.  I followed the spin program to BIW from a gym that had closed.  As of April 2011, I have become an instructor for the spin program.  I love being able to share my passion for cycling (I do some road riding and mountain biking) as well as my love for music.  It's a great combination. I really dig being a student in the classes and I'm psyched to be a part of the spin program as an instructor.

Lisa - Indoor Cycling

I'm excited to be a part of the Berkeley Ironworks indoor cycling program!  I've been teaching at BIW since 2008 and enjoy sharing my love and enthusiasm for sports and maintaining a healthy lifestyle with everyone who attends my classes.    I incorporate into my workouts my background and experience in competitive and endurance cycling as well as my studies in personal training, kinesiology and fitness.  My Thursday indoor cycling class is welcome to experienced athletes as well as those who are new to working out, is 1.5 hours in length and uses heart rate training as a basis for targeting intensity and effort.  Outside of Ironworks I spend my time cycling, running, swimming and rock climbing whenever I have the chance.  I look forward to working out with you!

Becky - Indoor Cycling

Becky's class has been described as the "fastest hour you'll spend on a spin bike."  The choreography of her fast paced workouts with fun music distracts you from how hard you are working.  Best for intermediate and advanced riders.

Get out of your comfort zone and ignite the rest of your day! Build muscular strength and cardiovascular endurance in this all terrain training session which simulates the fast flats, steady hills, sprints and intervals of a challenging outdoor ride. Participants of all fitness levels highly encouraged to attend. Gabrielle has been a loyal member of BIW since the day it opened in May 2000. She is a certified spin instructor and began teaching at BIW in July 2005 and it has been her passion ever since. In her spare time, Gabrielle enjoys trail running up in the Sierras with her dogs on weekends, and mountain/road biking.

Victor - Boxing
Victor is your east coast raised east bay living, San Francisco working, youth coordinating, boxing instructing kind of guy.

If you add a dash of eskrima, a pinch of poetry, two teaspoons of tall tales, and one full cup of fun, you might find me wrapping your hands getting you ready for boxing class.  If not, you might see me lane splitting across the bay bridge, climbing at the same place you love to climb, mushroom hunting after the rain, or hiking in that place we both love to hike. I'm looking forward to seeing you in class, in the gym, or that other place that keeps us looking forward to all that life has to offer.
