Granddude

On May 1st, former Mission Cliffs & Touchstone Concord employee Avery McClenahan gave birth to her first child. 'Berkeley Vector' was born at 2:30pm and both mother and child are doing well and home from the hospital. Avery is in her final weeks at UC Berkeley where she is double majoring in economics and art history.

For those who may not know Avery, she is the daughter of head route setter Craig McClenahan. This is Craig's first grandchild but don't try and call him 'grandfather.' When asked, Craig said he is not a granddad but rather 'Granddude.'

All of us at Touchstone wish Avery and Berkeley all the best, as well as a huge congratulations to Craig on becoming a 'Granddude.'

Touchstone Staff Runs Fast

On an extremely rainy and windy Sunday recently, staff members from Touchstone gyms in Berkeley, Sacramento, Oakland and Concord, teamed up to race each other around Oakland’s Lake Merritt. Hosted by Lake Merritt Joggers and Striders (LMJS), the Couples Relay event featured a two-person relay, with each runner given a 5K leg around the lake. At 30 years old, this unique competition is LMJS's oldest foot race. Having already run this race several times in the past, Great Western Power Company staff member Skimra Rodriguez thought it would be fun to challenge her colleagues at Touchstone to team up with a staff member from another gym. Thanks entirely to her stellar performance, Skimra along with Pipework’s Vaughn Medford won bragging rights as the fastest pair, but not without good-natured promises of revenge next year from the other teams.

DRG Gets Cool

Starting this February Diablo Rock Gym will be installing a air conditioner throughout the gym in an effort to keep the building more temperate over the summer.

This plan dates back over a year ago to the beginning of 2007 when Lyn Verinsky the new Manager of the GWPC in Oakland started this master plan. (Please forward all thanks to her).

During construction we ask for your patience in advance as some of the weight
room and other areas of the gym might be in disarray. We’re sure you won’t mind the discomfort when your chilling off during the heat of July.

E-Waste Drive Continues....

Photo Caption: Two weeks worth of E-Waste waiting to be recycled. All of this will be saved from landfills thanks to our earth friendly Concord members.

This January Touchstone Concord will be continuing its Electronic Waste Drive (E-Waste) through the end of January in part to the initial success of its first two weeks. What is E-Waste you might ask? It could be a few different things depending on the type of pack rat you are. Come by the front desk to check out what is accepted (almost any electronic device) and if you drop something off we will give you a FREE day pass (1 pass per member).

Lyn Does Thriller

Great Western Power Company manager, Lyn Verinsky, recently climbed one of the most classic boulder problems in Yosemite Valley, if not the world. Thriller, v10, climbs a gently overhanging wall in the heart of the Camp 4 boulders and is a climb that not only tests one's strength, but skill and determination as well.

Lyn began to try the climb in earnest last fall after seeing her friend, Robyn Puro (who also happens to be 5'2"), nab the second female ascent. After many days and hundreds of attempts, Lyn's hard work paid off this last Saturday. Nice work Lyn.

Here is a video of her send:

Concord Kick Starts TBS3

Concord’s attendance was higher than normal this last Friday. Maybe it was the 60 new boulder problems, it could have been that it was member guest day, or possibly it was the free pizza and beer (thanks to Pyramid Brewery in Walnut Creek). Regardless 154 climbers picked up a scorecard and took to the walls. Thank to all those who helped put together the first bouldering comp of the 3rd season, specifically the awesome Concord desk staff, the course setters for the fun (and sometimes frustrating problems), and those unsung hero’s who tabulated the scorecards behind the curtain. See you all in San Jose on November 16th.

To check out photos from Friday night check out the competition gallery and for the latest results check out the competition page.

Getting Outside

On September 11 after fixing lines, Touchstone members Humberto Marquez, Paul Hara and Ironworks member Bob Boggs, started climbing the Lurking Fear route on El Capitan. The were armed with lots of pre-climbing beta from Touchstone instructor and world class climber Hans Florine plus logistical support (Sherpa duty!) from gym members Margaret Hara, Leo Bates, Ironworks member Leo Burk, and others.

The trio was hoping to climb the route in 3 days with enough emergency provisions for 4. The climb actually took 6 continuous days, including the rappel down. "Bob got real sick the first day and had to go back down. After that, it was tough going. When Bob went down, so did our engineering brain" said Paul. "During the third day Humberto and I considered going down because we were moving so slowly and the top was so far away, but we decided to see how high we could get with our remaining provisions and energy".

The pair finally reached their goal of Thanksgiving Ledge at sunset of the 5th day. Humberto said "Its a beautiful, big ledge with a small cave with a sandy floor. By far the best bivy of the whole climb."

What's next for the pair? They're setting their sights on The Nose route of El Capitan. According to Humberto, "If we can climb a little bit faster, we just might make it!".

Yelping

Ever wonder what other climbers think about the gyms? Follow this link to find out what other people are saying on Yelp about Touchstone Concord and add some comments of your own.

Here's one highlight:

"For a beginner, this is the place to go to if you want to learn from a knowledgeable staff and a patient one as well. The vibe is a plus and the equipment to stretch out are great. Besides the coffee they offer at the front is definitely needed. The people that worked there when I visited were what I call military safe, our instructor taught us as a group and then made sure we each knew how to tie our own ropes and how to belay properly. At other locations, they will show you how and make sure you know how to, but here they will stay with you for your first few runs up. Safety and fun here are a priority." -Robert B.

You can also find 97 reviews of Mission Cliffs, 33 reviews of Ironworks and even 7 reviews of Touchstone San Jose. Yelp is also a great way to find a good restaurant around the gym to try after your workout.

New Managers

Current Touchstone Concord manager, Lyn Verinsky will be taking the helm at the Great Western Power Company, the seventh Touchstone gym in the greater Bay Area, when it opens this fall. Lyn has worked with the company since 2003, first as desk staff at Class 5 and Berkeley Ironworks, then as manager of Class 5 and Touchstone Concord.

An avid climber since her first time on the wall at Ironworks in 2001, Lyn has embraced the climbing lifestyle and has tried to take as many road trips as her job and 11 year old son allow. Most recent adventures include a winter trip to Hueco where, as she laughingly says, "I had an amazing time getting spanked by the powerful climbing." Fontainbleau, Yosemite Valley and Squamish top her list of favorite climbing spots, though she also has a fondness for local crag Mortar Rock.

Taking over as head honcho at Concord is long-time desk staff Andrew Descalso. Andrew was one of the first members of Touchstone Concord when it opened almost five years ago and has worked the desk since 2004. Andrew has a love of bouldering that has survived even an ankle break while climbing at the Druid Stones in 2005. His most recent climbing accomplishment was a proud send of the infamously hard Ironman Traverse in the Buttermilks this last winter. Highballs and mantels are Andrew's greatest nemeses, but he has a weakness for adorable and friendly canines. One description of Andrew can be found on the yelp website reviewing Touchstone Concord: "Andrew . . . is fabulously helpful, not to mention easy on the eyes!"

A Teen Team Adventure

Goat Rock isn't exactly the most alluring of names for an outdoor bouldering destination, but as a contingent of Teen Team members discovered, there's some good climbing on those rocks. Other than running afoul of a few patches of poison oak growing in the area, everyone enjoyed an idyllic day with great weather, beautiful vistas of the ocean, good company and fun bouldering.

A Triathlon for Concord Staff

Front desk staff person Alle Porter competed in a triathlon on June 16th. The event was the first in a series known as the Tri for Fun, which features a short course with a 400 yard swim, an 11 mile bike ride, and a 3.1 mile run. Held at Shadow Cliffs Regional Park in Pleasanton , this was the 20th year for the triathlon that was designed for everyone to complete and enjoy.

“It’s a great event for anyone who’s ever even thought about doing a triathlon. The atmosphere is relaxed and the people are friendly,” says Alle, whose been competing in triathlons since finishing college three years ago. “My goal is to compete in an Ironman triathlon, but that will be years from now.”

There are three Tri for Funs, one held each month from June though August, which are designed to allow novices the chance to test their athletic ability and try to improve upon their performance with each event. In September the athletes are encouraged to compete in the Tri for Real, which features a more lengthy and challenging course and serves as the grand finale. Although primarily designed for beginners, the Tri series serves a number of elite athletes looking for a competitive workout.

“The most daunting aspect of a triathlon for most people is the swim,” says Alle, who completed the triathlon in a little over an hour with Touchstone Concord member Bryan McCarthy. “In the beginning you may get hit by a few elbows, and there’s always a lot of splashing, but after a couple of yards the lake is yours for the taking.”

Teens to Nationals

It's almost a wrap for the USA Climbing season, so Concord members Evan Cronin, Gregor Peirce, Troy Gibb, Scott Cory, Gabe Matson and Wes Miraglio (not pictured) made the trek to Portland, Oregon for Divisionals. All did well in their categories, with Scott, Gabe, Gregor and Troy climbing well enough to be invited to Nationals taking place in Ann Arbor, Michigan on July 6-8. It's great to have this group of teens representing Touchstone! We want to with them the best of luck this weekend in Michigan.

The Future of Youth Competitions

It was May 2005 and Touchstone Concord was hosting the USAC Regional Competition. The gym was abuzz with 81 competitors from 11 different teams and a large crowd of spectators watching the kids vie for an invitation to Nationals. Competition climbing looked to be on track to become the next Little League, gaining in popularity and participation.

Fast forward two years. Touchstone course setters have once again put up National-level routes in preparation for a strong field of junior competitors, but this year the crowds and excitement never materialized. A precipitous drop in the number of competitors, 30% fewer, begs the question: is there a future for competition rope climbing in the U.S.?

The answer is a resounding yes, if Scott Jenerik, Northern California Regional coordinator of USA Climbing has anything to say about it. Scott has immersed himself in many aspects of the competition scene. He coaches a highly successful youth team out of the Touchstone gyms, sets routes for Touchstone (including setting for the regionals), and of course volunteers much of his time coordinating for the national USAC organization. Given the energy expended by individuals like Scott and the support of gyms like Touchstone who put a considerable amount of time and money into hosting competitions, chances are good that this year's low turnout is a fluke and we'll see even more kids psyched about competition climbing in the coming years.

Although most of the Touchstone gyms did not send Teen Team members to this competition, kids affiliated with Touchstone gyms did incredibly well, taking first in six of the nine divisions. To see final comp results go to USA Climbing's web site. Of particular note were Concord members Gregor Peirce taking first in Male Youth B, Dakota Schwartz taking third in Female Youth C, and Scott Cory taking second in Male Youth A.

Fun Had By All

The hoards descended on Touchstone Concord for the start of TRS2 and went away tired, full and happy. Tired from climbing themselves out on the 14 comp routes ranging from 5.8 to 5.13c; full from chowing down on pizza and soda; and happy to have competed in yet another fun Touchstone community event with a group of positive and supportive climbers.

109 competitors attended, many of whom were competing for the first time. And every Touchstone gym was represented by at least a few of their members. Final scores can be found on the TRS2 comp page.

A special thank you goes out to Evolv Shoes for putting on a shoe demo during the comp and for donating a pair of shoes. Also thanks to Stone Age Climbing who kindly donated a much sought-after hang board. Next stop for the TRS2 is Class 5 on June 22nd. Don't miss it!

USA Climbing Comes To Concord

(There is an entrance fee of $35 for USA Climbing members, $40 for non-members.) Doing well at this competition may qualify Juniors to attend the Divisional Championships in Tigard, Oregon in June.

The bouldering area will be closed during this event and there will be limited rope-climbing available since most of the gym will be in use for the competition. However, people are encouraged to come out as spectators to enjoy world-class climbing, a $3 lunch and an entertaining speed climbing event. Or, for anyone interested in lending a hand, volunteers are needed to run the isolation area and help in other ways. Call Touchstone Concord at 925-602-1000 to get more information and sign up!

Slack Line Wizards

It began three years ago when Justin and Shaun first laid eyes on someone walking along a taunt line of webbing spanning thirty feet across the gym. "It looked amazing," says the 24-year old Shaun. Now, each Monday morning you can find the two of them on the slack line, which Shaun describes as a "tight rope with one inch webbing."

They come to the gym to climb, but more importantly, to practice some moves on the slack line. Their only access to one is at Touchstone Concord. "It's a separate sport in itself," says Shaun, who admits that slack lining has improved his top-rope climbing abilities. "It improves balance and body awareness."

Shaun's favorite trick on the slack line is a hand stand, which he can hold for several seconds before tumbling down onto a crash pad. Justin, however, prefers a daring front flip off the line and onto the floor. Please be advised: these are trained professionals.

Not really, but Shaun and Justin are amazing to watch, and they have been slack lining long enough to offer some tips if you're thinking about trying to walk the line. "Start small," says the 21-year old Justin. "You will get very frustrated in the beginning, but don't give up."

Touchstone Concord Sendfest in Bishop

Concord members, Andrew Descalso, Gregor Peirce and Scott Cory, took a week off from school and work to go on a road trip to Bishop, with some spectacular results. Making clear once again that Touchstone is home to many a strongman, Gregor and Scott polished off several difficult Bishop problems such as Beefy-Gecko v11, Evilution (lip) v10, and Acid Wash v10.

Although Andrew wasn't able to send his project, Ironman Traverse, despite great beta from climbing master, Scott Fry, he did learn a lesson about the importance of securely attaching crashpads to the roof rack of his car. As Andrew describes it, "While cruising below the posted limit along 395 I caught a glimpse in my mirror of a huge black Metolious tri-fold pad taking flight behind the car, gracefully landing in the middle of the freeway. A quick 180 and a few tight knots later the pads were secure and we were back on track with another story to be told."

For more pictures and stories from their trip, check out Andrew's blog at http://web.mac.com/adescalso/iWeb/Climbing/Home/Archive.html and Scott & Gregor's scorecards on 8a.nu.

"Fight for a Cure" a Great Success

Touchstone gyms aren't just a great place to work out; they are also a great place to help out a worthy cause. Recently, Touchstone Concord helped out St. Jude's Children's Hospital and cancer research center by holding a fundraiser in February. All told, Touchstone Concord members donated and gathered $1327, to help this great cause. Members raised money by getting sponsored for routes climbed and hours spent working out. Additionally, many opened their hearts by opening their pocket books. If you have a group that is interested in having a fund raiser at Touchstone Concord, please contact the manager.

Peer Counselors Get A Turn

Touchstone Concord was pleased to host a group of 27 teenagers from Mt.
Diablo High School for an afternoon of rock climbing. The group was
invited at the behest of the Concord Police Department who used the
event as an opportunity to thank the students for volunteering their
time as peer counselors and mediators on campus. Since climbing
promotes teamwork and cooperation, the police department felt that a day
climbing at Touchstone Concord was the perfect activity. A great time
was had by all and most everyone left with tired forearms and a desire
to try climbing again.

Touchstone Memebers at ABS Nationals

Touchstone Concord and Team Fuego members Gregor Peirce, Gabe Matson, Evan Cronin and Wes Mirgalio traveled to Timonium, Maryland to compete in the ABS 8 National Championships that took place February 16-18. All four boys train with Coach Yuki Uemora for Team Fuego and were excited to be heading to their first National-level competition. Scott Cory and Troy Gibb, also from Touchstone Concord, attended the event with their team, Zero Gravity.

Despite this being Gregor's first on-site format competition, he took first in his division, Youth B (14-15 year olds), a truly impressive accomplishment. The rest of the Touchstone crew also did well, with Gabe and Evan taking 19th and 29th respectively in Youth A. Wes placed 23rd in the Juniors' division and Troy took 7th in Youth B. Scott Cory fought through an ankle injury sustained in the qualifying round and still managed to place 8th in Youth A.

Gregor climbed perfectly in the qualifying round, flashing all four problems. He continued his streak of great climbing in the finals, flashing the first problem and getting the 2nd high point on problems number two and three. Troy reached the high point on problem number 3 and came within a hair of making it a 1-2 finish in their category.

On the female side, Dakota Schwartz, competing in the Youth C category, took 14th place. This category was won by Mission Cliffs Member Cicada Jenerik. All in all, a great performance by everyone from Touchstone Concord! We look forward to following these strong, young climbers in their future adventures.

You can also read more about these climbers in the Monday edition of the Contra Costa Times or online here.

Concord Supports St. Jude's

A fundraising event benefiting St. Jude Children's Research Hospital will be held at Touchstone Concord on Wednesday, February 28, at 7:00pm. Participants will turn in the donations they have gathered and celebrate doing something for a good cause with pizza, soda and cake.

All month, Concord members have been gathering pledges from awesome folks who are willing to sponsor them for every climb they do in a day or for every hour they exercise in the fitness area. Members are motivated to climb and work out to support this internationally recognized organization because of St. Jude's outstanding work in finding cures and saving children with cancer and other terrible diseases.

By participating in this event you can help raise funds for children stricken with cancer, AIDS and sickle cell anemia. If you are interested in participating or making a donation, please contact Eric Cohen at Touchstone Concord (925-602-1000). Concord's Artist of the Month

Currently gracing the walls of Touchstone Concord are photos from Monica Aranda, desk staff and climber.

In her own words: I have been taking pictures for the last six years, both digital and analog. Recently, I have decided to begin creating a portfolio called, Climbing a Way of Life. I have been working on this for the last year and I chose fifteen prints from that portfolio to display. They are all printed on Ilford's matte 11x14 fiber paper. My goal is to build a strong portfolio of different sport images to present to high profile magazines such as Urban Climber, Rock and Ice, Wakeworld, Wakesurfing Mag and National Geographic.

Come by the gym to view these photos through the month of February.

Biggest Loser

Who's the biggest loser at Touchstone Concord? That's the question Lupe Labourdett's indoor cycling and kickboxing students are trying to answer with their 2007 "Biggest Loser Competition." Anyone and everyone is invited to participate in this 6-week weight loss challenge.

How the challenge works: participants contribute $10 each to the prize purse, with the money going to the person who loses the most weight in six weeks. The first weigh-in takes place at Touchstone Concord on Wednesday, January 3rd, at 6:30pm. Six weeks later, on February 14th, everyone gets weighed one more time to determine the winner! After the second weigh-in, all participants are invited to go out and celebrate.

If you have a little extra you've been meaning to shed after the holidays and want to make losing weight in the New Year fun, give this a try! Have questions? Call Lupe at (925) 768-5127 or leave a message for her at the gym.

TBS2 hits Concord

Touchstone Concord keeps breaking records for attendance to their bouldering competitions. With 194 competitors at the latest TBS2, December 8th, people were literally climbing the walls. Fortunately, the problems extended into the roped areas, so there was enough room for everyone. Competitors and spectators alike had a great time as usual; pizza eating, beer and soda drinking and chocolate sampling was enjoyed by all. Recently certified massage therapist and course setter extraordinaire, Brian Cork, was even on hand to rub the soreness out of tired and tight muscles.

The winner of Advanced Men at the first two TBS2 comps, Scott Chandler, had to sit this one out due to a finger injury, which made room for Simon Benkert to swoop in and take a decisive first place. Cicada Jenerick took first in women's advanced. For more comp results go to the comps page. You can also see pictures from the Concord comp in our online gallery.

Concord Staff Trip

The Touchstone Concord staff had a great day bouldering in Yosemite Valley on their November 18th staff retreat. The weather couldn't have been better: cool and sunny. A few highlights of the trip: new staff member, Monica Aranda, sent the classic Cocaine Corner; Scott Chandler put to rest his nemesis, Thriller; first time boulderer, Grace Ragsdale, surprised herself by mastering some tricky slab problems.

After a full day of climbing, everyone took their tired muscles and shredded skin to the Lodge cafeteria where folks rewarded themselves with large amounts of fried food and chocolate cake. Andrew Descalso proved himself to be the most impressive eater of the bunch, easily downing a large mayonnaise packet to win a bottle of $2 Chuck. It was a fitting ending to a fun day.

Concord Classes

Three new classes, all focused on making a fitter, stronger, you are being offered at Touchstone Concord in November:

Longtime climber and motivational speaker, Hans Florine, is psyched to make you a better, more powerful climber in his Training for Climbing class offered SOME Monday and Wednesday evenings from 8-9pm (please check the schedule to see when Hans is teaching). This class is open to anyone wanting to get better at climbing or just get stronger in general. No harness or climbing shoes are needed in November.

Hans is also offering a morning fitness training class at 5:30 am on SOME Wednesday mornings. Be prepared to get in a great workout before work! Hans says: people are welcome to join the class even after the 5:30am start time.

Join Kathy Schwartz on Friday mornings for a fitness "boot camp" that will kick your booty into high gear. Using a mix of cardio and weight training to up your heart rate and maximize the fat burn, this class will keep the pounds from accumulating during the holiday season.

Also, please take note of the new Core time: T/TH 5:40 - 6:25pm.

For more information about the new classes being offered this month, check out the Touchstone Concord November Newsletter.

What We Like

Touchstone Concord staff have favorites in the retail area. Here Scott Chandler and Andrew Descalso share their top picks.

Scott says:
The Petzl stainless steel thermos will surely become your most used and dependable crag companion ever. While sleek and stylish, it is also extremely durable and will keep your beverage of choice piping hot for hours on end. It sports a cap that doubles as a cup and for easy one-handed operation just press the red button to open and close the valve. Whether on your way to the crag or in-between attempts on your latest project, the Petzl thermos will be there for you, dishing out the heat you need.

Andrew says:
One pair of jeans, in three different colors describes my normal cold season wardrobe of Prana’s Drifter Jeans. For me, they are fashionable enough to wear out at night so I don’t get hassled by my many girlfriends, even though “I bought them at the climbing gym.” The jeans are an agile and comfortable pant to climb in, especially for colder outdoor sessions or the relaxed Friday night plastic-pulling social hour.

Further proof that I, as a man, will never understand women’s fashion was given when I saw designs and writing on the inside of the new women’s t-shirts in our retail shop. These shirts from Mission Playground all sport inspiring phrases, such as: “Live with Passion” (on the front of this Kelly green 100% organic cotton t-shirt). Despite my confusion over seeing art on the INSIDE of a shirt, I appreciate the message stating that their non-profit organization funds the outdoors I love. Flip their shirt inside out today to find out what Mission Playground is all about.

Kids of Climbing

Dakota Schwartz is one of Touchstone Concord's rising star youth climbers. Having recently taken first place in the Intermediate Category at the Concord Rope Competition in September, it should be no surprise to see her photo in the 2007 Kids of Climbing calendar. A great photo of Dakota bouldering in an area near Santa Barbara can be found by flipping to June. The quote from Dakota expresses how many of us feel about climbing: "Climbing is like a state of mind - where I am happy, focused and flowing right along doing what I love." It's a privilege for Touchstone Concord to be a place where kids and adults alike can discover their love for our awesome sport. And it's a huge pleasure to see our members take center stage as inspirations for the climbing community as a whole. Congratulations Dakota!

It is Finished

The TRS finale held at Touchstone Concord on Friday, September 15th delivered all that it had promised: 14 excellent routes, free beer and pizza, lots of great prizes, exciting lead falls and a nail-biting finish in the Men's Advanced category. 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners, Scott Cory (16), Simon Benkert (16) and Dustin Park (19), were separated by a mere 300 points, with Scott Cory flashing the 3 most difficult routes to take the win. Dustin Park, the homegym favorite, still handily won the Advanced Men's category for the series and heard a lot of cheers when he finished the 13c route third try.

To say that the young Touchstone members had a strong showing would be a bit of an understatement. Cicada Jenerik (12) cruised the 12a and 12c to clinch the Advanced Women's title for both the comp and series. Concord member, Jacob Phillips (12), won the Intermediate Men's category by sending the 12a second try and making it to the first box of the 12c. Dakota Schwartz (12), also a Concord member, had a great night and took first in the Women's Intermediate category.

It's a miracle that anyone over 20 had a chance, but Berkeley Ironworks members, Mike King and Ngoc Nguyen who placed first in the Beginning Men's and Women's categories respectively, showed us that climbing isn't just for the kids. All in all, it was a fun night and not only for the comp winners - everyone had a great time.
