The beaches of Seaside, Oregon are a scenic three hour trip by car from the glaciated slopes of Mt. Hood. But on August 23rd, Touchstone members Caydie McCumber and Sebastien Lounis, along with a team of 10 other friends, will link those landmarks on foot, covering a winding 200 mile course in the 2013 Hood-to-Coast relay.
Their team is running the relay as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, for which they’ve collectively committed to raise at least $18,000 before toeing the start line. To help raise some of those funds, Caydie and Sebastien will be hosting a bake sale next Tuesday, July 23rd at Berkeley Ironworks, and they’re hoping you’ll come out and buy some tasty treats to support their cause.
Caydie, a nine-year Touchstone member, and Sebastien, a five year member, were inspired to run Hood-to-Coast as a cancer fundraiser in support of several close friends who have either lost loved ones to cancer or been diagnosed with the disease within the last year. Both avid boulderers, they’ve had to sacrifice a little bit of their gym time, and climbing grace, to train for the race.
“My butt tends to get a little bigger when I’m running a lot,” says Sebastien, “which isn’t great for those thin ‘hips-close-to-the-wall’ slab problems.” But whenever they can, they try to keep a healthy mix and follow up their training runs with a good session. If you’d like to donate directly to their efforts, you can do so on their team fundraising page. (All donations are tax deductible) Otherwise, keep an eye out for some bad-ass brownies, banana bread, pie and more from 5pm to 9pm next Tuesday.
