First Timers

What you need to know for your first visit.

Whether you’re trying climbing for the first time or still have a box of pitons in the attic, you’ve come to the right place. We offer a variety of climbing options, fitness classes, and community events for every level.

If you’re new to our gyms, here’s what to know before you come in.

Three Ways to Climb
at Mission Cliffs

1

Top Roping

In top roping, the climber is secured to a rope that runs through an anchor at the top of the route and back down to a belayer.

To top rope at our gym, you’ll need to either take a class or pass a belay test. Gear rentals are available at the front desk.

Never climbed before? We created a whole series of short videos to get you up to speed on safety and etiquette:

2

Lead Climbing

Lead climbers tie in at ground level and clip the rope into quickdraws as they climb.

Lead climbing requires specific skills from both the climber and belayer. Want to learn? Check out our Lead Climbing Clinics.

3

Bouldering

Bouldering is climbing without ropes or harnesses. All you need is a pair of climbing shoes — rentals are available.

New to bouldering? Watch our safety video, sign up for a Dogpatch Boulders' Intro to Bouldering Class, or ask our front desk for a quick orientation.
