Complete Guide: 5 Types of Training Boards at Touchstone

Complete Guide: 5 Types of Training Boards at Touchstone (and where to find them)

Boards are a great tool for climbing training, whether you are looking to diversify your gym session or preparing to send your next outdoor project. As a board climber, you become a part of a global community of like-minded enthusiasts who are creating routes, sending projects, and training on the same problems.

At Touchstone, we see training boards as a complement to our world-class routesetting, and many of our gyms have one or, in some cases, multiple boards.

Learn more about the 5 types of boards that we offer, including wall angles and app info, below.

Touchstone Board

In 2019, Touchstone created its very own training board as a lower-angle alternative to existing models. Fixed at a 35° angle with LEDs installed so you can easily map out a project, the Touchstone Board is an accessible introduction to board climbing. Our app focuses on bringing the Touchstone community together and allowing members to create problems for one another across our gyms.

MoonBoard

Originating out of the School Room, Sheffield’s famed indoor training hub, the MoonBoard was developed in 2005 by professional climber Ben Moon. This board is the original, standardized, and interactive training wall, fixed at a 25 or 40° angle, and is the foundation from which all of the other modern training boards have iterated their design and functionality off of. Since 2016, Moon Climbing has produced six unique hold sets, and we offer three versions across six Touchstone locations. Tension Board (TB1 & TB2)

Tension Climbing entered the boards market in 2016, and with their TB1, was the first company to offer angle adjustability, wooden holds, and a symmetrical layout. The mirrored system with wooden holds created an unmatched, skin-saving training experience for climbers looking for a systematic approach to their training.

Wanting to move beyond just offering a mirrored setup, in 2022, Tension released their TB2, and now, from one hold set, you can set your wall up as mirrored or spray and change it at any point. The TB2 holds are diverse in shape and texture—wood along with dual-tex PU—and allow for an accessible training experience for the novice to expert climber, even as the angle of the board changes.

Mirrored vs. Spray layout?

Tension is the first and only board to offer both a mirrored and spray wall setup. The mirrored setup allows a climber to train systematically, but does not have the movement possibilities of the spray wall. Both have their benefits, which is why Touchstone does not subscribe to one or the other, and we offer both versions across six locations.

Spray Wall

The spray wall was the original artificial replica of outdoor climbing. The first documented spray wall, dubbed a “woody,” was pioneered by climbing legend Todd Skinner (the first person to free climb El Capitan via Salathe, among other notable achievements), and has been a staple in climbing gyms across the country and world for decades. With the evolution of climbing holds, our spray walls are filled with diverse hold types and brands for a creative, collaborative, and focused training experience.
