ABOUT WOMAN UP 2019
Touchstone’s Third Annual Woman Up Climbing Festival, brought to you by Touchstone + Mountain Hardwear, returned to Dogpatch Boulders on July 19th – 21st. We were thrilled to showcase this year’s all-women routesetting crew and celebrate women in climbing!
WHAT THE WOMEN HAVE TO SAY:
COMPETITION
Our third annual Woman Up competition was nothing short of incredible! After battling their way through the Qualifiers, only six competitors made it to the onsight Finals round to go head-to-head for a $5,000 cash purse. From hometown hero Kelly Birch to rising stars like Kylie Cullen, Cloe Coscoy, and Alyssa Weber alongside seasoned pros Alex Puccio and Alex Johnson, we watched on the edge of our seats as each athlete absolutely crushed the problems.
Open Finals Ranking | Name |
---|---|
1st | Kylie Cullen |
2nd | Alex Puccio |
3rd | Cloe Coscoy |
4th | Alex Johnson |
5th | Alyssa Webber |
6th | Kelly Birch |
We were psyched to see so many women hyping each other up and cheering as everyone pushed themselves to their limits in our Citizens competition. What an absolutely impressive turnout of everyday crushers from the extra-pep-in-their-step newbies to gym climbing lifers and weekend warriors! It was an all-day climbing extravaganza! You can find the scores for the Citizens Competition here.
THE ROUTESETTERS
Of the many things that make the Woman Up Climbing Festival so special, our all-women routesetting crew may be our favorite. Woman Up is the only climbing festival in the world set entirely by women. Jackie Hueftle chiefed the event for the third year in a row, bringing over two decades of experience to the crew. With a handful of return setters from the previous Woman Up events and a batch of new Touchstone setters, these ladies set some absolute classics for the comp!
CLINICS AND WORKSHOPS
Several amazing clinics and workshops took place on July 21 including an all-day routesetting clinic led by the same crew who set all the problems for the Woman Up comp and instruction from pros like Alex Puccio, Cloe Coscoy, Lynn Hill, Katie Lambert, Lisa Rands, and Dawn Glanc!
PANEL
The theme for 2019’s panel was Breaking Boundaries. A panel discussion from women and non-binary folx across different aspects of the climbing industry comprised of Lynn Hill, Sydney McNair, Lisa Rands, Nikki Smith, Summer Winston, and Mimi Zhang. Spanning a variety of backgrounds and experiences, each of them has carved out space for themselves in the industry and paved the way to a better future for everyone. The conversation was at times irreverent, other times somber, and wholly memorable. We were so honored to have been able to close out Woman Up 2019 with this brilliant group of people.
KEYNOTE
A keynote address by Beth Rodden kicked off the psych of Woman Up 2019! Beth is one of the world’s most accomplished rock climbers, with a number of 5.14s under her belt in sport, trad, and big wall style. Her Yosemite route Meltdown (5.14c) is one of the hardest trad climbs in the world and didn’t see a second ascent for over 10 years. She’s currently focused on her hardest pursuit yet: motherhood. We were honored to have her share her story with us in 2019!
