In June, The Studio hosted Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bay Area (BBBSBA) in a fun-filled day of indoor rock climbing.
Big Brothers Big Sisters
For more than 100 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters has sought to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported one-on-one relationships to help them improve their confidence and achieve success later in life. It is the nation’s largest donor and volunteer supported mentoring network. Big Brothers Big Sisters makes and monitors meaningful matches between adult volunteers (“Bigs”) and children (“Littles”), ages 6 through 18, in order to develop positive relationships that have a direct and lasting effect on the lives of young people. The BBBSBA provides youth from all over the Bay Area with volunteer mentors while helping to organize community events for matches to enjoy.
Strengthening Relationships Through Climbing
For one afternoon, the BBBSBA brought 9 matches to The Studio to enjoy a day of indoor rock climbing. Both Bigs and Littles were trained on belaying and had a chance to challenge their mental and physical strength by taking on a variety of indoor climbs. Their confidence grew with each climb that they did, and thanks to the encouragement of the Bigs and the support from The Studio staff, many Littles enthusiastically took on more challenging climbs as the afternoon wore on.
Indoor rock climbing served as a powerful exercise in teamwork and partnership. It reinforced the special bond that can grow between Bigs and Littles over time, especially with activities like these. Some Littles took on challenging climbs with such fervor and concentration, many wanted to continue rock climbing in the future!
