If you’ve upped your cross-training game since the rain put a damper on your climbing plans, or if your #newyearnewyou resolutions included jumpstarting your running habit, maybe you’ve decided to treat yourself to a sweet new pair of running shoes. Rad! But what do you do when your old pair starts to look a little ragged? If you’ve been wanting an alternative to throwing your thrashed sneakers in the trash, Touchstone’s got your back with Dunk Your Kicks from the Max Cure Foundation.
The Max Cure Foundation is a childhood cancer foundation that raises funds for pediatric cancer research and helps provide financial assistance to low-income or military families who have children battling pediatric cancer.
Through the Dunk Your Kicks program, Max Cure in turn works with an international footwear recycler called Rethink Nation, which sells the used sneakers at an affordable price in developing countries where access to proper footwear is limited. Max Cure receives up to $1.00 for each pair of shoes donated.
The process is simple: just bring your gently-used sneakers to one of the following gyms, drop them in the Dunk Your Kicks box, we’ll take care of the rest. Using your old shoes to fight childhood cancer AND provide footwear to those in need? Yes please!
Touchstone gyms with Dunk Your Kicks boxes:
- Berkeley Ironworks
- Diablo Rock Gym
- The Studio
- Dogpatch Boulders
- LA Boulders
- Cliffs of Id
- Hollywood Boulders
- Great Western Power Company
- Sacramento Pipeworks
Mission Cliffs already supports Campus California, so if you’re in the Bay you’ve got options for where to donate your ol’ faithfuls.
Please note that the Dunk Your Kicks program CANNOT accept used climbing shoes!
We’re still looking for ways to recycle our blow-outs too, so if you hear of any good programs be sure to let us know.
