GoGoBot Team Visits LA Boulders

In February, a team from GoGoBot, an online directory and community, visited LA Boulders. Here were some of their reviews.

Adjacent to Little Tokyo, this gem of a place is located in the Toy District, East Downtown. I have to admit, it was a little scary driving here at night, but I was glad I made it! This place ROCKS! :) The staff is knowledgeable and super passionate about bouldering. They are eager to help, especially if you're new to bouldering. Membership is decently priced - you get access to bouldering, weight training area, cardio machines, showers, lockers, etc. I became a member on my first trip! -Yulree Chun

The staff are super friendly and helpful. Ryan gave us an introduction to the facility and an explanation of the grading system: 0 zero as easiest to 6 being the hardest, padding, and how to fall correctly on their padding. The community is friendly. Since level are mixed throughout the place, you can have expert level climbers right next to beginners.  Overall, this place is a great place to boulder. I would highly recommend. - Billy

Great facility and awesome staff. I could spend hours here and never get bored! Parking can be limited but opens up at night when businesses in the area are closed. Make sure to constantly look up, down and around when walking around the facility because you never know when someone could fall on you! - Diana Tran

Where, a worldwide destination guide, took the time to hand pick 6 ways to stay active in San Francisco. And guess who made the cut?

San Francisco is home to a world-class climbing gym with 50-foot-high walls and 23,000 square feet of climbing terrain. The newly expanded, wildly popular Mission Cliffs is the original flagship of the world’s largest indoor climbing company, Touchstone Climbing. Its new sister gym, Dogpatch Boulders, dedicated to a type of rock climbing that does not use ropes or harnesses, is the largest gym of its kind in the country.

Pushing Past Obstacles at The Studio Climbing

Screen Shot 2014-05-07 at 2.22.23 PM

One of our favorite members was featured in the San Jose Mercury News! Check out his inspiring interview!

Name: Leland "Bubs" Williamson
Age: 43
City: San Jose
My favorite workout: At age 21, I was hurt in a motorcycle accident and became paraplegic. I've played basketball for the Golden State Warriors wheelchair basketball team for 15 years. Yet, years ago I was looking for a different kind of workout that would get me out of my wheelchair, and I found it at Touchstone rock climbing studio (in San Jose). My climbing partner is showing me climbing techniques, how to do knots, tie ropes.
How often I exercise: I'm at the studio two or three nights a week and play basketball two days a week. I also go running in my wheelchair. I can push 20 miles a week.
What motivates me: I'm building internal strength that the public doesn't see. And one day, I will climb Yosemite's El Capitan, not only achieving my goal, but being an inspiration to the community that supports me.
The hardest part is: Letting my muscles recuperate so I can do it again.
What it teaches me: I'm learning about the obstacles in life. Once you see it, work at it and get past it, you think that's all it was -- it was just an obstacle.

Date Night at The Studio Climbing

Screen Shot 2014-05-07 at 2.10.04 PM

Rope climbing takes two, which makes it an obvious date night activity! Jessica Yadegaran, from the San Jose Mercury News took a closer look:

The vibe: Admit it, rock climbing is hot. The teamwork. The tension. The sweat. If you've never done it, why not take a class with your main squeeze? Flex your muscles and learn how to support one another with a drop-in class at The Studio, the trendy San Jose location of this Bay Area climbing gym. You'll learn the basics of top-rope climbing and belaying your partner in addition to learning how to tie-in as a climber. It's safe. It's sexy.

The details: $29 for non-members includes rental gear, an hour of instruction and a day pass to the gym. Classes are 4:30, 6 and 7:30 p.m. Mondays-Fridays; 11:30 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. Saturdays-Sundays.

For the couple who: Break each other's falls.
